The cameras were locked on her facial expressions during the qualifications.  She seemed very unsettled.

She bounced off the mat landing on one of her most difficult moves.  Same thing again that caused her to drop out.

I think she's injured;  maybe an Achilles or something like that.

She said it was a mental thing, and not an injury. But who knows. Maybe she is one of the athletes that feeds off of the crowds.

I think gymnastics has to be a very mental sport.  She does some of the most aggressive, and therefore more dangerous moves, in the sport.

It would seem like she would be putting herself at risk if her head is not into it more-so than many other gymnasts.

I saw where the gymnasts who didn't qualify had to be out of the country in 48 hours per the Covid protocols.

I wonder if we would be allowed to bring a gymnast back on the team if she doesn't compete for whatever the reason?

Sounds like it was very much mental. She’s had to hear she is the best of all time for a long time and she commented she wasn’t in a good headspace and lost her bearings on the vault.

Have to hand it to the other 3 team mates for picking up the pieces to get silver.

Katie Ledecky easily wins the 1500m freestyle. That’s swimming a mile! She is the best long distance swimmer out there. USA also took silver in the event as well.

Looks like the WBB 3x3 team beat the Russians to win the Gold medal.

The Team USA 3×3 basketball squad—featuring WNBA players Stephanie Dolson of the Chicago Sky, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young of the Las Vegas Aces and Allisha Gray of the Dallas Wings—won the first-ever women’s gold medal in Olympic 3×3 basketball on Wednesday Night at the Aomi Urban Sports Park in Tokyo, getting by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), 18-15. China squeezed by France, 16-14, for the bronze.

From the outset, Team USA controlled the game; and showed off the balance of its attack. On the first U.S. possession, Gray took it hard to the basket to draw a foul. Plum hit lefty scoop shot; her favorite trick. The 6’5″ Dolson—who goes by the Instagram handle is “bigmamastef”—used her size to grab an offensive rebound and score. She finished with nine rebounds, each one seemingly more crucial than the last. The U.S. rushed out to a 12-5 lead, but Russia fought back, to put it to 15-12 with 1:30 left. After Plum missed a three-pointer with 1:16 left, Dolson positioned herself to grab another offensive rebound. She got fouled and hit two free throws to gave Team USA a 17-12 lead with 1:16 to go. In 3×3, a five-point advantage at that point in the game is enormous, as two-point shots are worth one-point and three-pointers worth two. After Russia cut it to 3, 17-14, with 44 seconds left, Dolson, of course, had another rebound and putback that essentially sealed the game.

Booyah!  Glad to see Suni Lee get some Gold.  Team USA sticking together and getting it done.

With the news that Simone Biles was out of the women's all-around competition, all eyes were on Sunisa Lee as the American gymnast who was most likely to become Olympic champion by the end of the day.

Lee was up for the challenge. The 18-year-old put together a string of masterful performances to edge Brazilian Rebeca Andrade (57.298) for the gold medal with a total score of 57.433. Lee becomes the sixth American gymnast to accomplish the feat. Andrade's silver is the first-ever Olympic medal for Brazil in women's gymnastics.

The South Carolina duo of head coach Dawn Staley and alumna A'ja Wilson again guided the U.S. to a victory in Olympic women's basketball preliminary round action, topping host Japan 86-69 on Friday. Wilson led all scorers for the second-straight game, netting 20 points to go with her 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

The U.S. allowed Japan to get no closer than eight points in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-0 in Group B play. The U.S. will play France to wrap up group play on Mon., Aug. 2, at 12:40 a.m. ET on USA Network.

For the third time in as many games, South Carolina alumna A'ja Wilson led the U.S. in scoring as the Americans claimed a 93-82 win over France in the final came of preliminary around action at the Tokyo Olympics. The U.S. advances to the quarterfinals, where it will face Australia on Wed., Aug. 4, at 12:40 p.m. ET.

The U.S. opened the game on a 9-2 run but saw France surge to a 22-19 advantage at the end of the first quarter. After tying the game at 39-39 midway through the second quarter, the teams battled to halftime with the Americans holding a 50-44 advantage.

Turnovers had the U.S. on the back foot in the third quarter, helping France cut into its deficit. Holding a 71-67 lead in the fourth, the Americans saw France continue its momentum to take a 72-71 lead less than a minute into the final period. The U.S. righted the ship with seven straight points, including a pair of buckets off assists from Wilson. Midway through the quarter a Jewell Loyd 3-pointer made it a 10-point game, which was enough to hold off the French.

"I thought at times we made great adjustments, and I thought at other times it looked like a team that hadn't had a whole lot of practice," U.S. head coach Dawn Staley said. "But we found a way to win. I'm super proud of our team that we're able to take people's best punch, and we continue to fight, and we continue to find a way to win basketball games. That is tribute to the players in their ability to make big plays."

Wilson's 22 points led all scorers, and her seven rebounds tied Breanna Stewart for team-high honors.

France has some solid athletes.  Great win for us.

South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley led her United States team into the Tokyo Olympic semifinals with a commanding 79-55 victory over Australia on Wednesday. Shaking off an exhibition loss to the Aussies a few weeks ago, the Americans made an early statement with a 14-point lead after the opening quarter and never looked back.

"I think our players had a look in their eyes that they didn't want to go home," USA head coach  Staley said. "They want to compete for a gold medal. This was a do-or-die situation, and it was great to see them just play with that energy and effort on both sides of the basketball."

Playing just 16 minutes against Australia thanks to the lopsided scoring, South Carolina alumna A'ja Wilson hit double figures for the fourth-straight game with 10 points and reeled in four rebounds. Through four games of the tournament, Wilson's 17.8 points per game leads the U.S. team and is the fourth-highest average in the event. Her 8.5 rebounds per game are second on her team and sixth in the tournament. Shooting 62.8 percent (27-of-43) from the field, she ranks third in the tournament and second on her team.

On Wednesday, the U.S. saw Australia open a narrow 6-4 lead early before holding the Opals scoreless for more than six minutes in the first quarter, which included 10 Australia turnovers to yield a 26-12 U.S. advantage after the opening 10 minutes. A tighter second quarter still saw the Americans out-score Australia by seven to take a 48-27 lead into halftime.

The U.S. added eight more points to its lead in the third quarter, allowing Staley to go to her bench more in the fourth as all 12 players on the roster saw action on Wednesday.

In Friday's semifinal game, set for 12:40 a.m. ET on NBC, the United States will face Serbia for the right to play for a gold medal. The Serbs finished second in Group A and then eliminated previously undefeated China in the quarterfinals to advance.

South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley has her United States team on the brink of Olympic history after the Americans topped Serbia 79-59 in the semifinals Friday to advance to the gold medal game. The U.S. is looking for its seventh-straight gold medal, which would match the U.S. Olympic Men's Team's streak of winning the first seven golds (1936-68) after the sport's Olympic debut.

In Friday's semifinal game, South Carolina alumna A'ja Wilson added nine points, three rebounds and two assists to the victory.

"It wasn't our best overall performance," USA head coach  Staley said. "I thought we did a tremendous job defensively, just making it really hard for the Serbian team to get off clean looks. Offensively, I just thought we put enough points on the scoreboard to win. It wasn't as clean and fluid as we would like, but at this stage of the game, you're going to have to win a lot of different ways, and we found a way to win."

While the offense was less fluid in Friday's game, the U.S. defense was locked in. Serbia entered the game averaging 71.0 points, but netted just 59 against the Americans, who held the Serbs to just 30 percent shooting and out-rebounded them 46-39.

Like the quarterfinal game, the U.S. came out strong in the first quarter, establishing a 25-12 lead after the opening 10 minutes. After Serbia took an early 4-3 lead, the Americans launched an 8-0 run that started with a Wilson midrange jumper and ended with her hitting a pair free throws to give the U.S. an 11-4 lead midway through the period.

Both teams tailed off offensively in the second quarter, but the Americans had enough to add seven points to their lead, taking a 41-23 lead into halftime. The 18-point lead was enough to keep the Serbs at bay in the second half to set up the potential for history in the gold medal game.

The United States will face Japan in the gold medal game, which is slated for 10:30 p.m. ET on Sat., Aug. 7. The Americans topped Japan 86-69 during preliminary round action in Group B. Japan defeated France in the other semifinal to set up the rematch for the gold medal. The game will air on NBC.

I have yet to be able to watch a game live because of the game times and time difference.  I wish they would have put beach volleyball on at o'dark-thirty instead of WBB.

LOL

You can watch the game highlights free on Peacock, but you have to be a paid subscriber to watch the full game replays.

The replays are much longer than the ones we are used to on SECN; about 4-6 minutes.  Pretty good stuff if you don't feel like watching the whole game.

I watched the highlights of the Serbia game last night.  Our defense was good. We could score at will in the paint and hit 3s.

It was essentially like our 2019 team on steroids.

A'ja is breaking to rim a lot and that's something she didn't really do here.  Breanna Stewart has gotten a lot better, too, since her UConn days, if that's possible.

A'ja was drawing a lot of double-teams in the paint on offense, which is freeing the other players up to score.  She didn't score much, but the team won because she freed up other players.

Serbia got within 9 at one point and then started throwing up bricks and it was all over.

You just KNOW Dawn is going to incorporate what she's doing now into our 2021-22 team.
