USC football coach Steve Spurrier is a spokesman for the state’s campaign against underage drinking. But he was criticized in the media, and by a representative of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, for his comments following the arrest earlier this month of reserve quarterback Tanner McEvoy, who has since left the team.

McEvoy was stopped in North Carolina for speeding. He also was charged with driving after consuming alcohol as a minor. He was not charged with DUI.

Spurrier and athletics director Ray Tanner did not suspend McEvoy. When asked about that decision, Spurrier said McEvoy had had just a single beer or two as far as he knew, and he wasn’t going to suspend a player for a speeding ticket.

Those comments, of course, let to criticism of Spurrier in some quarters. Saturday after practice Spurrier was asked to respond to the criticism.
