Jerideau and Williams reinstated

COLUMBIA — Defensive tackle Byron Jerideau, of Green Pond, and strong safety Brison Williams have been reinstated to South Carolina’s football team, according to a team spokesman. Both were indefinitely suspended last month.

Jerideau, a rising senior who has never started, was suspended after being arrested for traffic/pedestrian on a controlled access highway and disorderly/public disorderly conduct. The charges stemmed from an incident in which he left a Columbia bar, walked into the street, tried to stop traffic and almost caused an accident. He used profanity when speaking to an officer who approached him.

Williams, who started one game last season as a true freshman, was suspended for “conduct detrimental to the team,” according to USC, which did not offer specifics. Columbia police said Williams had not been arrested.

USC lost defensive tackle Travian Robertson from last season’s team. Junior Aldrick Fordham and true freshman Kelcy Quarles shared time at the other tackle spot. Both will return in 2012. Jerideau was listed as Robertson’s backup last year.

Williams was the backup last season to junior DeVonte Holloman, who will return along with free safety D.J. Swearinger, a junior last year.

The Gamecocks begin spring practices March 12 and are scheduled to hold their spring game April 14.

The USC spokesman said coach Steve Spurrier has no comment right now on linebacker Angelo Watley, a true freshman last season who was suspended after being arrested Sunday and charged with grand larceny, credit card theft and second-degree burglary.

Watley, who redshirted last season, was not a high-profile recruit.

Rivals.com ranked him the No. 80 recruit in Georgia in his class, but did not rank him nationally at his position.
