College Football Countdown: University of South Carolina

Gamecock DL Frank Wright recorded 32 Tackles For Loss (career 5th all-time) from 1981-84.

A standout at Greenwood High, Wright was named All-State and Lineman of the Year as a senior in 1979. He went on to be named Defensive MVP of the 1979 Shrine Bowl and was named a prep All-American by the National High School Coaches Association. Wright spent one season at the Tennessee Military Institute before joining the Gamecocks in 1981.

He was good enough as a true freshman to see enough time to record 39 tackles and 5 sacks while backing up All-American Andrew Provence. He played especially well in a win over Kentucky, recording three sacks. Wright moved into the starting lineup full time the next season, teaming with Provence to form a strong interior line.

Wright had good seasons in 1982 and 1983 but had his best season under new coach Joe Morrison in 1984.
His best game may have been the nationally televised win over Florida State when he had a sack, two forced fumbles and four tackles. He was named All-State by the state’s sportswriters and played in the East-West Shrine Game for college seniors after the season.

Wright was drafted by the New York Giants and spent time in camp with the Giants in 1985 and the Colts in 1986.
