Gamecocks at Mississippi State Late Tuesday Night

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina (10-19, 3-13 SEC) hits the road for the final time this season with another late 9 p.m. (ET) tip at Mississippi State (19-10, 7-9 SEC) on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs are fresh off a victory over No. 25/25 Texas A&M on Saturday at Humphrey Coliseum.

Mike Morgan (pxp) and Ron Slay have the call for the SEC Network broadcast tomorrow evening.

The Gamecocks are seeking the team’s fourth SEC road win this season which would give head coach Lamont Paris the most SEC road victories by a first-year coach in program history.

The Bulldogs have won nine of the last 12 in the series, including five-straight on their home floor dating back to 2018. Carolina’s last win in Starkvegas at The Hump came on Feb. 11, 2017 during the team’s historic Final Four season, 77-73. Carolina was ranked No. 19/16 at the time and the victory kept the team tied for first in SEC play with No. 12/15 Kentucky. All-American Sindarius Thornwell scored 28 points and dished our four assists to lead the Gamecocks.

TIPOFF NOTABLES

> A New Chapter of Gamecock Men’s Basketball is underway with first-year head coach Lamont Paris this season.

> Paris, who has been a part of nine NCAA Division I Tournaments and 17 twenty-win seasons as a college head and assistant coach, was named the University of South Carolina’s 33rd head coach by Director of Athletics Ray Tanner on Thursday, March 24, 2022.

> This new-look Gamecock squad features eight new players (four transfers and four freshman) headlined by standout freshman forward Gregory “GG” Jackson II, the highest rated recruit in program history (recruit rankings started in early 2000s). He joined former Carolina standout PJ Dozier (2015-17) as the only five-star signees in program history.

> Jackson’s 15.1 points per game average is seventh nationally amongst freshmen.

> After scoring 23 points off the bench at Missouri (Feb. 7), Jackson notched his eighth 20 points game of the season, the most by a Gamecock freshman since Carolina joined the SEC in 1991-92. He now has nine 20-point performances after scoring 20 in a road win at LSU (Feb. 18).

> After scoring 20 points at Florida (Jan. 25), he matched Sindarius Thornwell (7 in 2013-14) and Bruce Ellington (2010-11) for the most 20-point games by a freshman with seven. AJ Lawson had six in 2018-19 in his first year on campus.

> Meechie Johnson, who had a career-high 26 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists in a 71-68 win at Rupp Arena over Kentucky (Jan. 10), became the first South Carolina player with 25 points, five rebounds and five assists in a game since Gamecock great Sindarius Thornwell (25 points, eight rebounds and six assists) on March 4, 2017 at Ole Miss.

> The Gamecocks face another tall task on the offensive end of the floor Tuesday night as the Bulldogs are one of the top defensive teams in the nation.

> MSU ranks sixth in scoring defense, allowing just 59.6 points per game. They rank seventh in field goal percentage defense (38.8 percent) and 22nd in 3-point field goal percentage defense (30.3 percent).

> They are 14th in the country in steals per game (9.1) and are also ranked just outside the top-50 in rebounding (55th – 37.2 rebounds per game).

> Tolu Smith is one of the league’s top players. He leads the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg).

> The Bulldogs have won seven of their last nine games after putting together a five-game win streak that started with a 81-74 overtime win over TCU (Jan. 28).
