Gamecock football catching up on the latest news
Dec. 16, 2022

Gamecocks lost Austin Stogner, Jaheim Bell, and MarShawn Lloyd to the transfer portal earlier this month. The trio combined for 1,451 yards of the team’s offense in 2022. The losses are palpable to South Carolina’s game plan, but head coach Shane Beamer has set his sights on making adjustments.

Coach Beamer has a real problem on his hands with the way the NIL deals are being handled internally. He has to engage more behind the scenes with the big 20-30 consistent donors when it matters the most. He’s taking a passive approach when going toe-toe with other coaches. As the “GM”, he’s made some calls not to overpay a few former players which we could collectively agree on would not have been worth it. Lloyd, Bell, and Edmond would have been a combined 1.3 million, which is absurd. Not to mention, a Juco OL heading to the plains asking for a 300k bag is borderline insane.

However, there are going to be times when Beamer has to get involved with donors and simply secure the bag. Is Habor one of those decisions? I thought so but not sure the under armour money could be matched (Tanner’s seat should be melting on the way he has handled this). Nonetheless, there are some big names in the portal that no one is mentioning that the staff feels good about bringing to Columbia

“I don’t mean this negatively, but I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about the guys that aren’t here,” Beamer said. “We’ve got a bunch of really special young men and people in this program right now that are here and excited to get back to work.” South Carolina dealt with a similar situation in its bowl game last year. The team used wide receiver Dakereon Joyner at quarterback after Luke Doty, Jason Brown and Zeb Noland sustained injuries earlier in the season.

He acknowledged the challenges that come with the departures and that the team must adjust with the personnel that remains. “We played a lot of games this year with two and three tight ends on the field at times,” Beamer said. “Well, we’re not going to be able to do that against Notre Dame. So you’ve got to be creative in what you do.” Notre Dame won’t be without its share of offensive losses, either.

Its starting quarterback, Drew Pyne, decided to enter the transfer portal. Star tight end Michael Mayer will skip the bowl game to prepare for the NFL Draft. “The teams that you’re going to start seeing and playing in bowl games are going to look a lot different than the teams you saw the last week of the regular season,” Beamer said. One of the main differences for this season, though, is that the Gamecocks will be without an offensive coordinator.

Marcus Satterfield was around for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl win over North Carolina last year but departed for Nebraska soon after the Clemson game. With Adkins transitioning to an off-the-field role or into retirement, it’s going to be interesting to see how things play out and the timing of it. Following the Clemson game Offensive line coachTeasley’s job, unless Loggains brings a curveball. Teasley is well-liked by all the Players, coaches, and recruits and did an outstanding job stepping in for Atkins.

Things are happening behind the scenes to secure Jimmy Smith from Arkansas. The Darlington native would bring a presence on the field and off the field in recruiting that the Gamecocks haven’t had since Jay Graham. Also, the potential factor of bringing Rocket Sanders would bring depth in the RB room. There’s a lot of negative smoke around Hardesty and just feels it’s a matter of when and not if.

Nick Coleman will be calling plays in the bowl game. It will be a collaborative effort with Stepp, Freddie, & Zeb from a game-planning perspective, but Coleman will be behind the headset. With his previous OC experience at the CC level & Murray State, just made the most sense. More losses are on the horizon for the Gamecocks when looking into next season. Traevon Kenion also announced that he will step away from football, and Nate Adkins will have completed his college eligibility after the bowl game. Christian Beal-Smith completes his eligibility this season and Dante Miller whom the Gamecocks added from the portal before this season also is in his last year.

South Carolina will return three of its current scholarship running backs and will bring back one scholarship tight end on the current roster. The team could return one more tight end if sixth-year Chad Terrell who tore his ACL in August is granted one more year. In other news, all signs point to the duo of Rattler and Wells coming back next year. A strong and *consistent* season would put both of them in the first round.

Several of the team’s walk-on running backs and tight ends were seen getting reps at open practice on Thursday. It is not yet known how many of them will appear in the Gator Bowl if any at all. Beamer and the staff could look to the transfer portal to fill out next year’s roster. Gamecocks found success there last season with offensive players like Stogner, Spencer Rattler, and Antwane Wells coming to Columbia. Looking towards Dec. 30, Beamer and his staff will look to best use the available players and win a second straight bowl game for the first time in program history.
