Great article!

I am usually excited for Gamecock football to start, but I haven't been this excited in quite a few years.  I really believe that our greatest football days are ahead of us.

Totally, and I am in the same boat. When I opened that story, part of me was ready to view it with a jaundiced "they have to say nice things, he's their boss" eye ... but it wasn't really that they had great things to say about their boss, it was what they said, and how they said it that impressed me.

“I’m not saying we’re going to lose a game and on that Tuesday press conference I’m going to have a huge smile on my face. But I have a lot of confidence in what we’re about at South Carolina, what the players in this are about, the staff members we have here. I have a great group of people around me.”

Of course, the flip-side to all the positivity among his staff now is that familiarity breeds contempt and everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.

I don't know if anyone remembers this from the spring, but Satt only has a two-year contract vice the rest of the staff having three-year deals.  Maybe that's due to the financial situation with Muschamp at the time;  who knows?

Of course, Muschamp has 13.2M lump sum reasons not to care what me or anyone else thinks about him.  We basically set him up for life as a reward for destroying our football program.  We should have just canned him and taken our chances in court if we were willing to pay him the whole amount lump sum, but that is a separate discussion.

Beamer has been able to improve the things he can control up to this point and I don't see any reason for that to change with the practices and the regular season.

Generally speaking, I think we'll be okay.

In other words, it’s all just talk until the shootin’ (or gameplay) starts? You’re right. Talkin’ season is what it is … but I have to say he’s checked all the boxes so far.

Concur.  He's gotten things done so far.  Coaching and managing the team shouldn't be a challenge for him.

He's seen first hand how his dad managed his VT teams successfully for so many years.

I believe the players sense they are being coached by a better staff this year.

Coach White seems more of a do'er than a talker who is probably not inclined to Tweet that much, if at all.

He strikes me as someone who would be more concerned with proving it on game day and I think that's a good thing.

People want to get back out in the fresh air at W-B anyway for the obvious reasons.  The electricity at home will return if the team is consistently competitive.

Shane and his staff all strike me as fast-learners plus they have already learned to work together on some of the off-season events.  They seem to be intentional in-house team-building events to me.

I think that is by design and is a common work place improvement technique in successful businesses.  These things may seem inconsequential but they're not and Shane knows that.

There is no 'flip-side' to positivity other than negativity and nothing of worth has ever been made better because of more negative energy. There are no guarantees being made. There is no risk in being positive. No emotional exposure. Positivity does not and has never bred contempt.

I said familiarity, not positivity, breeds contempt.  Positivity and familiarity are two different words with two different meanings.

It is a known leadership and management principle, particularly in the military.  It means that a leader who is overly friendly with a subordinate is viewed as an untrustworthy friend (rather than as a boss simply doing their job) down the road when the same subordinate is chewed-out by the leader for whatever the reason.

Fully agree, things like his time working with his father, Spurrier and Riley were big reasons when his name first surfaced in the hiring process I personally wanted to see him here over the others.  Throughout his career everyone he’s been around has talking about his intelligence, passion and him being an upfront person.

I was on the complete opposite side of the coin - I couldn’t believe we were thinkjg of hiring a coach with zero HC experience. He won me over early and I have ridden the Shane Train ever since.

You said the flipside to all this positivity was that familiarity breeds contempt. I'm not the one who suggested one was somehow connected to the other...the flipside to the other. As you just said, these concepts have nothing to do with each other. I have both served in the military and either played and/or coached or had a child involved in competitive/travel sports for the better part of 50 years. Positivity is nothing but positive. It has never been a mistake from a coaching, management or a leadership standpoint.

Exactly.  We are two different people with different backgrounds, but neither of us are head coaches in the SEC or this program.

We have excellent facilities, but other teams with far less come in here and kick us.

We have a fine stadium, but other teams with much smaller stadiums come here and kick us.

You have all the sports experience.  Why has that happened up to this point?
