(Coaching search for November 22nd)

We spit out some late Saturday information for you. Ray Tanner has wrapped up his first week of the search and we’re told he was able to talk by phone with some of the top candidates he’s considering. He has not yet had any in person meetings with candidates but those are expected to start next week. According to sources, Tanner has had the chance to talk with Oklahoma assistant head coach Shane Beamer, Louisiana head coach Bill Napier, Coastal Carolina coach Jamey Caldwell, Louisville coach Scott Satterfield, Army coach Jeff Monken, and Liberty coach Hugh Freeze. We’re not expecting Monken and Freeze to be major players moving forward. Monken was hired at Army by current USC president Rob Caslen, so it’s reasonable that Tanner would want to satisfy his boss by talking with him. And as we’ve said before about Freeze, some board members want to see him more involved but his past NCAA and off the field issues at Ole Miss remain a non-starter. The other four look like pretty solid candidates at this point. I would imagine the calls this week were get-to-know-you conversations and gave Tanner a chance to get a read on each candidate’s interest. Our sources continue to indicate that Beamer, who is seeking his first head coaching position, is as interested in the Gamecock job as a candidate can be. Having been born in Charleston and having coached for the Gamecocks, Beamer has told people close to him that the USC position is his dream job. From what sources have told us, Beamer remains in strong position for the job, maybe the frontrunner at this point. We’re hearing Napier, who has been mentioned prominently from the start of the search, may not be as strong a candidate as he once was. Earlier this week Vegas listed him as the 3/1 betting favorite. Satterfield, of course, is highly regarded for what he did at Appalachian State and in 2019 at Louisville. His team has struggled this season though it did have a big win over Syracuse Friday night. Caldwell is the wildcard. His team is 8-0 after beating Appalachian State Saturday and likely to climb higher in the polls Sunday. He has been a winner at every stop of his coaching career but his lack of high level FBS coaching experience might work against him. Until Coastal moved up to FBS two years ago, Chadwell had never coached above the FCS level.

That's disappointing. I thought he would be the best fit if he wanted to come here. Either way, I think most people will be satisfied with any of the candidates.

Steve Spurrier never expressed interest in our program's HC back in 2005; Mike McGee reached out to him.

We need to try the same thing with Urban Meyer, if he's healthy enough for the job.

Tanner has too much Boy Scout in him.  Meyer and Freeze are probably at the bottom of his list.

Winning is the best recruiter.

The best coaches are the ones that turn 3* players into 5* ones and get the wins.

Those coaches are perceived as knowing what they're doing by recruits and then the 4* and 5* players gravitate towards that.

I agree how can you go hire a coach and never call or talk to one of the best that has ever come along, he probably would not take the job , but at least let's make the call make him say no I  think the board needs to step in or someone and say hey were going after Myer, I watched Caldwell Saturday he was great calling the plays,  I say if can't get Myer then he could be the guy. You have to have someone that has ties in the southeast, than can relate to the players . He could say hey I've won everywhere I have been and we're going to build something special at Carolina, don't you want to come along for the ride.

no to Monken, and that is all, no way no one wants to see the triple option

From what I've heard the only reason he runs that Triple option at Army is because it gives them the best chance to win based on the players he is able to get.  They said he would not run that offense if he was coaching elsewhere.  No way a triple option works in the SEC.  To much speed on the edges, sideline to sideline and second level defense.

Chadwell tops my list, followed by Napier and then others. I think Doty would absolutely excel in his system. Beamer is as far at the bottom of my list as my list can go. Of course he wants the job. There is a reason nobody has given him a sniff besides us - he doesn't have ANY experience running a program (let alone calling plays on offense or defense). NONE. I also expect a name or two to emerge that hadn't been thought of as being in the top group. We'll see.

Monken won't be running the under center flexbone option offense at a P5 school. He was hired at Georgia Southern to get them back to winning and was asked to run the option to win the alumni & fan base back. The option was their calling card and he knew who to hire and how to run it. He was brought into Army to turn them around after 15 years of futility and the option is really the only offense that gives the academies a shot at winning. He has them bowl eligible again and, if any school is smart enough to offer Monken a shot, then he'll get them winning.

Might just be me, but every day that passes feels like we are farther away from getting Napier or Freeze (who I really did not think was an option)  Seems more like Chadwell or Beamer now, but I really have nothing to base this on, just feels like things are moving that way.

I hear Napier has Covid and he wants big money. What that number is, who knows.  The new SEC hires last year make $3mm to $5mm per year - not sure where Napier would land, but $3mm at a minimum.  If we go with Beamer because we can get him cheaper, than that is not a good reason.
