For the 2nd time in the 3-game series, South Carolina and Northwestern play into extra innings, and as with Game #1, it was Northwestern that comes out the victors as they defeat the Gamecocks 4-3 Sunday and take the series 2 games to one. The Gamecocks (5-2) scored all of their runs in the 5th inning from a 3-RBI home-run from Noah Campbell, to take a 3-1 lead. The Gamecocks starting pitcher Brannon Jordan struck out the side in the top of the 6th, around a solo home run that pull the Wildcats (3-3) to 3-2, and was relieved for the 7th. Jordan allowed 2 runs both earned, with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks, and 2 wild pitches.

Cam Tringali relieves Jordan - he allows a lead-off double, and then with 1 out an error allows the batter to reach safely, and advances the base-runner to 3B, 1 out. Then with those 2 on base, a line out to right field is snagged by a leaping Andrew Eyster on a great play to record the 2nd out - on the same play, the Wildcat base-runners were caught off-guard by the great fielding play, and had moved up on the base-paths. Now they scramble to recover, but Eyster reacts quickly and throws out the 1B runner before he can make it back for the 3rd out of the side, but before that 3rd out is recorded, the 3B runner makes it across home for what is officially a Sacrifice RBI, and Northwestern ties up the game 3-3.

Finally, still tied in the top of the 10th, with Graham Lawson (0-1) taking the mound, Graham gives up a single, then a walk to put 2 men on. He strikes out the next batter for Out #1, then walks the next to load up the bases. He strikes out the next batter for Out #2, then walks the 3rd batter of the inning with bases loaded, to walk in the deciding run of the game. For the Gamecocks in the bottom 10th, Wes Clarke is hit with the first offering from the Wildcat pitcher, and after Eyster strikes out for the first Gamecocks out, Bryant Bowen singles to put the game-tying run in scoring position. But Jeff Heinrich and Dallas Beaver are both unable to take advantage, and they fly out and pop up respectively, for the final 2 outs of the game.

The Gamecocks now prepare for their mid-week game with North Florida Tuesday at 4:00 PM. A big rivalry series is up for next weekend against in-state foes Clemson - we need to work on some things.......
