Men's Basketball Receives NCAA Notice Of Allegations

South Carolina became the latest men's basketball program to be accused by the NCAA of a violation as a result of the federal investigation into corruption in the sport. According to a Notice of Allegations sent to the school by NCAA Enforcement, the association is alleging a Level I violation—the most serious at its disposal—related to a bribe paid to former assistant coach Lamont Evans.

In response to a records request from Sports Illustrated, the school released the NOA, which was dated Jan. 31, 2020. The association charged the school with a single Level I violation for Evans allegedly accepting at least $5,865 in bribes in 2015-16 from agent and runner Christian Dawkins. The bribes were in exchange for Evans arranging meetings between Dawkins and former Gamecocks guard P.J. Dozier and his family, in the hopes of swaying them to retain the agency Dawkins was working for, ASM Sports, which was run by Andy Miller.

Not sure why this took so long for the NCAA to make their response. South Carolina was one of the first programs targeted by the FBI during their 2017 investigation, and cooperated fully with their investigators turning over all documentation they had. Thus, South Carolina was one of the first programs targeted by the FBI to be cleared by the FBI of any legal wrongdoing, and removed from their purview of investigations.

But this is not the FBI, it is the NCAA, and they will be looking for scapegoats and examples for their lackluster responses against other elite revenue-generating MBB programs in the past that have actually cheated, such as UNC, Arizona, Louisville, and Kansas. We'll see how this plays out, I guess........

The Enforcement staff included no language in its NOA alleging that Dozier accepted money from Evans or Dawkins, which would have retroactively jeopardized the current Denver Nugget’s eligibility and potentially led to a forfeiture of wins—including victories that came during the Gamecocks’ 2017 Final Four run. Lacking that type of allegation, it would appear that that season is not subject to being vacated.

“As expected, this does not involve any institutional, current coaching staff or former or current student-athlete eligibility issues,” athletic director Ray Tanner said in a statement to SI. “We will continue to defend our program and institution in this process with the NCAA.”

We would be in deep dooky if PJ and/or his family had received any money.

I think Evans was paid but that was about it and nobody else knew about it.

Not sure if the school would throw somebody from Compliance under the bus or not.

I don't like this one bit.  It puts the spectre on our team that hung over Will Wade last year, and that obviously affected how LSU was received/perceived and likely was why some of the players at LSU tried to go pro early.  I pray that the kids on the Gamecocks squad don't read into the Notice of Allegations and think that they need to take their game elsewhere because of a fear of probation/sanctions.  UGH... This SUCKS.  And the NCAA is the same group that kept Brian Bowen from competing in a Gamecock uniform and sent him to test the waters as a pro instead of waiting things out.  I, personally, had a conversation with Chuck Martin when he first arrived in Columbia about that situation.  I'm still pissed about the way the NCAA treated our University when compared with many of the others who were involved in the scandal that is now coming back to bite us again.

Maybe Bowen will come back to testify on our behalf, since he is the POSTER BOY for mistreatment for absolutely no reason.  (Though I don't know how much that would help things).

Even that Dawkins guy that was paying Evans was recorded during the actual investigation claiming that Evans was one of those coaches that talked a big game, but if he was paid money that supposedly would go to the athletes or their families, instead he would pocket the money himself as long as people like Dawkins were willing to play along. In other words, the money was going into a black hole, and the people paying would get very little to nothing back in return. Sounds like it was crap that Evans was pulling, that only Evans and the people paying him would know about. But Evans did put Dawkins and that Sood dude in touch with some of his players while at Oklahoma State.....

Meanwhile UNC has fake classes for their student athletes and that’s just fine.

this is what I just don't understand....It took the FBI getting involved for the NCAA to do anything while other seemingly "egregious" things like UNC go unpunished...and let's not even forget about players taking money at Ohio St and missing single games

What does this do for Terry and Perry Dozier? They are both high school basketball coaches, it would seem to me that if either was involved it would hurt them but I have never heard of one high school or AAU coach getting in trouble for pimping out athletes. Kansas has much more severe allegations and it does not seem to have stopped them from doing business as usual and the NCAA has not even peeked into the Zion allegations at duke, what a joke!

^^THIS.  The reason people get in trouble for bribery schemes is that somebody didn't get what they paid for.
