If it is Kitchens this is a huge hire...all he has done at NC State is succeed. Bring guys in...multiple 1,000 yard rushers...almost every year...and then send guys into the pros. His one year at Air Force he had them ranked 3rd nationally in rushing...at Air Force...and when he was at Vandy is when they had Zac Stacey and Warren Norman...both gave us trouble every year...for years...again...couple more 1,000 yard rushers and I think guys who at least got a shot in the pros. He got moved up into that Co-OC roll after Drinkwtz took the App State job and it didn't work out as well as they had wanted...QB situation there was what really hurt them...but this is a real coach...again...Des Kitchens would be a great hire.

Are either of them wanting to leave or anticipating being on the market?

Any word on how he does recruiting-wise?  Probably kind of hard to gauge given the places he's been don't have the resources or latitude that USC does I guess.

Of course Settle and Gillespie would be improvements over Thomas Brown...yet neither has any desire or reason to leave their current jobs. Thomas Brown was here for one year and we went 4-8...he was at Wisconsin for one year...he was at UGA for one year...replacing BMac who moved on to coach WR...and then went to Miami with the fired Richt...BMac coached the bowl game that year...where 3 years later they were all fired again...Brown is a really good coach but he simply doesn't have the resume of either Settle or Gillespie...not many ever have.

But where did you get the idea Des Kitchings is a step backwards?

I could have coached Melvin Gordon in his senior year...he then goes to UGA  with Nick Chubb and Soney Mitchell for one year and they not only lose to us but they all get fired. I'm not sure about the Miami job but up until then he hadn't recruited any of the great players he coached and he was only there for a year at any of the big stops other than Miami where he made it for three...if you count us he was at 3 of his last 4 jobs for only one year...he's had 5 jobs in 6 years.

He had been the Recruiting Coordinator at NC States since 2014 through 2018 and NC State has had the 3rd most players drafted in the NFL...from the ACC...over that same period...players entering the 2019 draft that would have been recruited under his watch...behind only Clemson and Miami. Just to compare...over he same time frame...South Carolina has sent 13 players to the NFL and NC State has sent 17

Gillespie started his coaching career as a gamecock his first 4 years 2005-2008 including an Outback bowl win in 2009. I would think he is approachable. As a lifelong Gamecock I will support whoever we hire. He needs to be ready to prepare our RBs to go against our 2020 schedule which includes the last 2 national champions as well as Georgia, Florida and Texas A&M all most likely top 10 teams.

Agree Gillespie is a good one but Kitchings seems to be the pick here.

No excited about it but he's an assistant / position coach so there's a ton of variables.  We could hire the best out there but he may not fit in well.  It's all a guessing game so I'll hope for the best.  He's from the state and by all accounts a good recruiter.  Maybe the kind of guy who sticks around a while.

From what I’ve heard and read from experts, this is a big hire.  He was made a scapegoat this year for a decaying NC state program.  He is supposed to be an elite recruiter with roots in NC and SC and it’s surrounding areas.  I think a RB coach needs to be an elite recruiter and solid X&O guy.  I think he surpasses that need from reports and our O can use the fresh voice.

Settle seems “settled in” at Wisconsin. He’d be a great choice, quite honestly if I was going to hire someone from Wisconsin’s staff it’d be the OL Coach.

Likewise, Gillespie would be a good choice, but I don’t think we’ll go wrong getting Des. Good recruiter, good coach. And with the state of NC apparently having a lot of prospects the next couple of years, connections with NC HS coaches can’t hurt.

Its easy to criticize Tanner for hiring Muschamp, and it’s easy to criticize who Muschamp is rumored to be looking at to hire, but in both cases it’s highly doubtful anyone here knows the real story of how many back channel communications go on.  Muschamp could very well have already contacted half a dozen highly regarded RB coaches, or he may have contacted two. And in reverse, he may have received multiple calls from RB coaches, and he’s picking who he thinks is the best for the job.

It’s not as bad on this forum, but on others it seems trendy to be highly negative. I think we need to let it play out. If it’s Kitchings I think we’ll be fine. Brown was a very good RB coach, but his history is that of a job hopper. Hopefully whoever the choice is does a great job, and is here for a while for stability.

Its also being rumored that Robinson from a LSU is in play, I’d assume for RB coach. If true, he would be a major upgrade and a major coup for Muschamp.

This is right on the money. I'm not sure I completely agree with the 'scapegoat' call...even though I get exactly what you are saying...but NC State did not just fire Des.  Des has been the best recruiter in the state of NC for the better part of a decade...NC State has had ten 1,000 yard rushers over their entire hundreds of years history...he recruited/coached 4 of them...3 in a row up until this past year when they were forced to play three freshman...all good.

The Co-OC gig was some attempt to fill the Drinkwitz void...with the youngest team in the country...that just didn't work out as well as they  hoped but there were a lot of factors that lead to that...it wasn't the play calling. However, when NC State hired Tim Beck from Texas...after he was demoted there...Kitchens had an issue with going back to being 'just' the RB coach at NC State. In 2016 Kitchens had actually turned down the head job at Furman to stay and I guess after he was demoted as part of what were wholesale changes at State...they cleaned house...they had simply reached the point where it was time for a change on both sides.

But again...NC State has dominated recruiting in NC since he became the head of recruiting for the Wolfpack...his guys produce and he send guys into the NFL...that alone makes him my choice.

Fun sorta unrelated fact: If you count Russell Wilson...who finished his career at Wisconsin...at one point last year there were 5 starting QB's from NC State in the NFL...Wilson, Rivers, Brissett, Finley and Glennon...that's crazy

After checking out the LSU boards there may be some legs to this...I'm basing this mostly on the idiocy of them claiming they have been trying to fire him anyway despite the fact that he is currently their assistance head coach, recruiting coordinator and running back coach for their National Championship team...they are even claiming he isn't a very good recruiter...despite the fact that LSU was ranked #5 last year and #1 this year under his leadership and the year prior to coming  to LSU was named recruiter of the year in the PAC-12

He doesn't stick around long but he is a great coach with a shit load of experience at the absolute highest levels...Dallas Cowboys, Texas Longhorns, So Cal Trojans, LSU Tigers...we will see but if it is between Kitchings and Robinson then good on Boom for continuing to impress.
