Sunday Night Muschamp Tele-Conference Notes & Audio

Nov. 10, 2019

USC coach Will Muschamp has a simple solution to winning more football games with the Gamecocks. Run the ball better. Coming off a loss to Appalachian State in which his offense produced just 21 rushing yards, Muschamp said he has directed his offensive staff to come up with new personnel packages and formations to help the running game. Muschamp said in games they have run the ball well, they have won. The Gamecocks are 4-6 with games at Texas A&M and home to Clemson left. They have to win both to quality for a bowl. The Aggies are 10 point favorites.

Will Muschamp conference call

Some of Muschamp’s key comments:

  • Felt they were very good on defense against Appalachian, disappointing on special teams. Gave up 10 points related to kickoff returns.
  • Tavien Feaster, OrTre Smith and AJ Turner questionable for this weekend while Bryan Edwards and Shi Smith are good to go against Texas A&M.
  • Said they had 7 drops Saturday and thought Ryan Helinski was accurate in his passes.
  • In light of recent coaching developments (Taggart fired after 21 games, Morris after 22), said he feels his administration (university president and AD) remain supportive of him.
  • Disputed a question asking why his team has more injuries than any other SEC team. Doubted that claim was accurate considering the team’s don’t release detailed injury reports. Added that they’ve had 4 season ending injuries this season, the average is 4-6.

What Muschamp said about his support from administration, conversations with Tanner Sunday night

After a night when his team struggled in a myriad of ways, South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp said he still feels good about the support he has from his administration.

His team is sitting at 4-6 and in danger of falling to 4-8 as it projects to be a double-digit underdog each of the final two games. But when he spoke Sunday night after the loss to Appalachian State, he spoke as a man looking forward.

“Everybody’s been very positive, supportive,” Muschamp said. “What we need to do moving forward, and that’s what you know, we’re excited about, not where we are but where we’re moving. And we’ve made a lot of strides. A lot of progress, being a program that in the first three years of the staff won more games than anyone else has. And we’ve had some inconsistencies this year that have been frustrating. We’re looking forward to battling out of it.”

They ain't battling out of anything this season. Maybe in 2020. It's obvious WM will get the chance to fix what's broken, though I seriously doubt he will. He seems to think all the problems are with execution on game days, and while he says the right things re: accepting responsibility, it's apparent that he doesn't believe it. Next year will probably be more of the same since it doesn't sound like he's willing to make any changes to the staff. And we all know Tanner isn't making a move.

You are right, but let me throw a spoon into the mix. Will Tanner be here next year? Will Boom be able to stick around if that does fall into place? Stay tuned. :rumor:
