Carolina Calls notes: Two upperclassmen likely won’t play Saturday & Bentley's timeline

Sept. 12, 2019

Coach Will Muschamp mentioned  Thursday night that veterans Brad Johnson and Randrecous Davis are players who were battling injuries heading into South Carolina’s game Saturday against Alabama. As of Thursday night, he said both are doubtful to play. Davis has yet to play this season, but has 12 career catches in three seasons on campus. Johnson is listed has having played in both games this season, but has no stats.

Muschamp said Davis (ankle) is likely out until the team’s off week in early October. Johnson has been dealing with a nagging groin issue since training camp. on defensive end Aaron Sterling is still dealing with a knee issue, but he could have played more than he did last week. “He’s good,” Muschamp said.

Muschamp also talked about Jake Bentley who had foot surgery on Tuesday. The injury was what was exactly diagnosed and it went well. “He’s doing extremely well,” Muschamp said. “It’s been fixed. “Extremely disappointed for Jake, a guy that’s given everything to this program.” The Jake will have a five-month recovery, the first three non-weight bearing.

RECRUITING

South Carolina Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said on Thursday night that more than 100 recruits would be in town Saturday for the Alabama game.

“We’ve got a huge weekend and it’s going to be a big weekend for us,” Muschamp said. “I’m so excited for it. I know how our fanbase is going to be and I know they’re going to turn out. It will be impressive. Any young man that walks into our stadium on Saturday is going to want to be apart of Gamecock nation, I can assure you of that.”

NOTES OF INTEREST

▪ Muschamp said against Tua Tagovailoa they have to mix coverages, man and zone, with a lot of pre-snap movement.

▪ Muschamp said the team can’t let coverages or pressure dictate how often Bryan Edwards and Shi Smith get the ball. Both need their targets and catches He also described freshman tailback Kevin Harris as a “bowling ball with butcher knives.”

▪ As he looked back at the Charleston Southern game, Muschamp showered Ryan Hilinski with praise when it came to being decisive and getting the ball out quickly.

▪ The Tide has employed fewer RPOs than last year with Steve Sarkisian coming from the NFL.

Davis is not  a big physical guy. By all accounts, he has ability if he can get on the field.

But we have been fortunate so far with injuries. Combined with added numbers/depth, we are in much better shape than at this time last year. It should pay off with improved results, the UNC game notwithstanding.

Davis is always spoken of as being a very good player by the staff, but always seems to have some kind of nagging injuries to hamper his performance on the field.  I hope he gets over this and gets in some valuable playing time before his career ends at USC.
