Ga State Kicks Vols 38-30 in Rocky Top home opener

Recommended Posts

Watching the highlights, it seems that he's finally got the spread offense/zone read thing in place that we stumbled with here.

His DT QB, Dan Ellington, is playing a lot like Russell Wilson does and it's working so far.

He's running to set up the pass.  It works.

For anyone who might have thought there would be a letdown after last week’s big win at Tennessee, the Georgia State Panthers proved Saturday night that the focus is real.

Dan Ellington passed for 362 yards and five touchdowns as the Panthers (2-0) defeated Furman 48-42 at Georgia State Stadium. The 38-30 win over the Volunteers of the SEC might have had some wow factor attached to it, but the win over the nationally-ranked Paladins (1-1) before a crowd of 20,351 at Pete Petit Field might have meant more because of how it was achieved.

Furman scored with ease on its first three possessions and held a 20-3 lead early in the second quarter, stunning a Georgia State defense which didn’t allow its 20th point to Tennessee until the end of the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Georgia State offense had only 81 yards of total offense, and 65 of those came on the first drive of the game.

And then the turnaround happened.

Georgia State wins it's home opener and goes to 2-0 despite being picked to finish last in the Peach Belt Conference this year.

Knock on wood, but it seems like Will and Shawn are both finding ways to score this season.

Great execution on offense.

They looked great.

After setting a school-record with 340 rushing yards last week, Georgia State (4-2, 2-1 Sun Belt) broke the record with 350 yards on the ground Saturday. It marked the first time in program history where three different rushers each went for more than 100 yards on the ground as Tra Barnett and Seth Paige joined Ellington with 100-yard games.

Georgia State finishes out the regular season at (7-5/4-4) and will play Wyoming (7-5/4-4 Mountain West) in the Arizona Bowl in Tuscon on December 31st.

That's pretty good for a team that was picked to finish dead last in the Sunbelt Conference this year.

Georgia Tech finished 3-9 and will be going to the cereal bowl this year.  Georgia State may make some serious recruiting in-roads in the Atlanta area if Shawn can keep it up.

"We are thrilled to be playing in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl against a quality opponent in Wyoming," said head coach Shawn Elliott, who has led the Panthers to two bowl games in his three seasons. "This will be a unique experience for our football players and one that we are looking forward to.

"Most of all, we are excited about playing another game with this team," Elliott continued. "We have a great group of young men who have overcome a lot to put together a very successful season. We've accomplished a lot of firsts and records this season, and this is not only a reward, but an opportunity to do even more."

Shawn Elliott is taking Georgia State to places it's never been before.  Good on him.

Georgia State fell 38-17 to Wyoming in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl Tuesday afternoon at Arizona Stadium.

Playing in their third bowl game in the last five years, the Panthers finished the season at 7-6.

In his final game in a Georgia State uniform, senior quarterback Dan Ellington went 13-for-26 for 156 yards and a touchdown through the air, while rushing 14 times for 70 yards and a touchdown.

With 355 yards of total offense, Georgia State broke its season record, collecting 5,718 yards to surpass the previous record of 5,627 yards set in 2015. GSU had already set new season records for points, touchdowns, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

Ellington led the Panthers down the field for a touchdown on their opening possession with a 6-play, 75-yard drive. He completed a 23-yard pass to Devin Gentry and Tra Barnett had a 7-yard run, but Ellington picked up the rest of the yardage on the ground, despite playing with a torn ACL in his right knee. He had a 29-yard gain down to the 20-yard line and scored on a 4-yard run, his first rushing touchdown since the injury, to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead just two minutes into the game.

Hats off to Dan Ellington for playing with a bad ACL.

I would say Shawn needs a good dual threat QB and a better DC for next season.

Wyoming beat Mizzou earlier this season.
