McClendon used a lot of Ropers concepts, scheme, and language in his first year as OC. Do you think he did so to avoid a full blown paradigm shift for the players, or is what we saw last year “his offense” that he wants to run in his career as an OC? The offense isn’t bad, but to me it feels a little hodge-podgy...like it’s stuck between two things, philosophically. I think the idea is for it to be dynamic and multiple but I don’t know what the identity is and it feels a little clunky and stubborn sometimes. Personally, I’m hoping that he is gradually steering it towards something that’s more sure of itself. To me, it’s less RPO and more play action & straight runs to set up the passing opportunities in a deliberate way. I’m a believer in BMac and Werner, and know this thing is going to evolve. Quite frankly, I have a little recruiting fatigue and wanted to talk some football. What do you guys think?

I think it will look much different this year as it continues to evolve.  I am not sure if that means a move away from the RPO, but I do think it means an offense more sure of whatever concept they want to put into place.   I believe in Bmac and think bringing Warner on was a very astute move by Champ.  I also think Wolford's impact will be felt more this year and allow Bmac to do more things that he would like to do.

I was and still am skeptical of the BMac hire but hope he kills it and makes me look dumb this year.  I believe he said this spring that they tried not to complete overhaul the O last year but to keep portions of the verbiage and concepts.  However, this spring they were supposed to have completely installed the rest of the O BMac wanted to run.  In the same interview I think they discussed how it caused him issues because was trying to run stuff but had to figure out how to blend two different verbiage or concepts together and it caused issues at times.

I’m not sure about the method of install and doing a two year install.  Every coach tries to figure out how to blend what they know with what their players know but I think we may have been better off just ripping the bandaid off last spring and installing a new offense like most new OCs do.  I feel like we wasted a year of getting to understand and run the system in games.  With all that said, I hope to see all the development pay and we get to see a dynamic offense this year.  I know we have the talent, I think it’s the run game that’s the key to the offense exploding.  If the we can start making Ds have to respect the run, it will open up big plays to Shi, Vann and Edwards.

I seem to remember reading an interview with BMac, when he first took over, about that very thing.  From what I remember, he said he was going to be instituting more of what he wanted, but doing it gradually over the next year or two.  Hopefully, as Lalli mentioned, the run game will be much better this year, and we will get to see more of what BMac has planned.

I think in the Spring game we did see some of just that. There were some different looking plays called that the O looked really comfortable with and a couple that they seemed to still be a little off. I am sure that by game time against UNC the O will be fully used to his new plan and we will all really like the changes. No doubt he is a smart coach and he will know just what they can excel with but like every coach, you got to know what your players can handle. I think him and Champ got that down.

This sounds silly, but I really think it's true....

We can run the veer offense (sic) and be successful.....if we have the proper blocking up front.

Coach Wolford is a professional and he has good players that should be practicing good technique.

That said, if we have to pass as much as we did last year, we are going to be in big trouble this year.  To be successful we MUST RUN THE FOOTBALL.  A LOT.

And block well.
