Felipe Haase will be entering his name into the NCAA transfer portal and intends to transfer from the South Carolina

April 25, 2019

Felipe Haase will be entering his name into the NCAA transfer portal and intends to transfer from the South Carolina basketball program, the school confirmed Thursday.

Haase will have two years of eligibility left. According to a report from The Big Spur, Haase could end up at Mercer, where his high school coach just accepted an assistant coaching position. The Big Spur was the first to announce Haase’s departure.Haase joins Jason Cudd as the second Gamecock player to transfer. USC also will lose Chris Silva, Hassani Gravett and Tre Campbell to graduation. A.J. Lawson submitted his name for the NBA Draft but has the option to return to school.

The 6-foot-9 Haase appeared in 32 games this season and averaged 6.3 points and 3.8 rebounds. He had a season-high 14 points against Missouri.

Haase was a three-star recruit out of Miami Christian High School in Florida.

We have such a guard heavy roster that it pains me to say I don't see how we have room, we need to replace Haase with a big or a 3-4 wing. With true PG's Bolden, Moss and Hannibal to go with Lawson, Minaya and Couisnard who can all handle the ball and run an offense we need another Bryant or McCreary type off the transfer portal maybe, Kerry Blackshear Jr from VT, Alex Illikainen from WI, Barret Benson from Northwestern

If I had to guess, Blackshear would not be an option, since Frank and Buzz Williams are reasonably good friends.  But there ARE a number of options in the portal right now.  One that I might consider would be Dominik Olejniczak from Ole Miss - a true 7 footer, with size to boot.  Another one who might be interesting would be Jordan Brown (Nevada).  Added incentive for Brown is that he would be playing in the SEC against his old coach at Nevada - Eric Musselman.  There are many options, though.  I hope that the Gamecocks staff had started conversations with some of the available ones already - I doubt that Haase's decision was a complete shock to Coach Martin.

I like Dominik out of ole miss and Jayce Johnson out of Utah or the flying Dutchmans brother Derrik Smits out of Valpriaso, Blackshear is a huge get for someone and I would love to see Frank reach out to him as he is the piece we need IMO He will just about have his choice of school to join. Matt Ryan, Keith Stone or KJ Lawson are a few others on the portal at the present.

I’m fine with any of the above except KJ Lawson.  I just could not have an AJ Lawson and KJ Lawson together.  My brain would hurt from all the initials and same last name. :-)

What do you think of Macaiah Henry? I think he would be a good fit to go with and help push Wildens and McCreary in practice and give us 10-15 minutes of hard nosed defense and rebounding with 5 fouls. He and Kotsar can work on FT's together...

Unfortunately, I'm not sold on the kid.  He's shown some good things at Tennessee Tech against high caliber opponents, but he's also had some games where he essentially laid an egg.  I think he brings the right things to the table - he's a guy who plays hard nosed defense and thus fits Frank's system overall.  But he's NOT a great FT shooter, and he's not going to beat the SEC competition scoring inside.  He's essentially another Kotsar - pretty solid defender, but not going to give you more than 8 PPG in general.  Granted, if he's the best available big right now, then we're not losing anything by grabbing him.  I'm just don't know who else they're chasing.  There are some quality bigs out there right now who I think would be a better overall get, but I don't have any special knowledge of who the coaching staff is actually talking to.

If he can set picks, rebound and play hard nosed defense with senior leadership he is a good fit, I think we only need someone looking to score off the glass or pick and roll with the guards and wings we have.

I cannot disagree with that.  It would be nice, however, to have an inside scoring threat who gives us more than the minimal amount of points.  Opening the game up by playing inside and out helps with Frank's overall style.

107.5 had the SoCon championship game on when I got home late from work tonight.  Mercer vs. UNC-Greensboro in Asheville.

They were calling Haase's name for Mercer a lot and I finally remembered he used to play for us.

I started watching the game on WatchESPN at the 6:00 mark in the second half.

He's the tallest guy on the team but he's nowhere near the paint on offense and kinda in the paint on defense.

Sound familiar?

Both teams essentially ran playground-style offenses with very few scripted offensive or defensive plays.  Four Mercer guys would collapse in on the ball-handler in the paint on defense and leave the wings wide open for the taking but UNCG wasn't into it.  An SEC team would have hung 30 on Mercer easily.

Mercer played 4 games to get to the championship game.  They kept it close but clanked jumpers and 3-pointers instead of driving into the paint in the final minutes.  They lost to UNCG 69-61.

I went from thinking from the radio, "Hey, we shouldn't have let Haase get away," to watching the game and realizing why he never was going to work out in Frank Martin's system.
