Gamecocks to host more top prospects for camp Week 2

June 11, 2018

Week 2 of Muschamp Camp starts Tuesday morning and runs through Saturday. South Carolina’s coaches will see several significant guests throughout the week, which will be capped by visits from a handful of 2019 prospects over the weekend.

The standard, one-day high school camps will be on Tuesday and Wednesday before the Gamecocks host two lineman camp sessions and a pair of high school 7-on-7 tournaments on Thursday and Friday.

The week closes on Saturday with a final Muschamp Camp session and specialists’ camp that will feature several kickers who could end up receiving offers to join the South Carolina football team, either on scholarship or as preferred walk-ons.

Starting with the weekend

Four-star cornerback Chris Steele (Bellflower, Calif.) will be in for an official visit, though it’s not confirmed when it will begin. The standard weekend visit schedule starts on Friday and runs through Sunday.

This much is certain: 4-star quarterback commitment Ryan Hilinski (Orange, Calif.) will also be back on campus. Hilinski, who took his official visit earlier this spring, will return as an unofficial guest, though the news is still significant.

Since he committed to the Gamecocks, Hilinski has played a relatively prominent role in recruiting prospects to join him in the 2019 class. Steele, of course, has been among his top priorities.

Steele’s other options include Southern California, Oregon and Florida.

Another target for Hilinski, 4-star cornerback Jaydon Hill, will arrive Thursday for an unofficial visit that’s expected to last through the weekend.

Tennessee and Mississippi State are the primary competitors for Hill.

According to the 247Sports composite’s cornerback rankings, Steele (4) and Hill (26) are ranked higher than the top 2019 cornerback targets South Carolina hosted during Week 1 of Muschamp Camp: Johnny Dixon (33), Cam Smith (34) and D.J. Daniel (junior college).

Tuesday and Wednesday

A pair of teammates from Woodbridge (Va.) High School are slated to camp on Tuesday. Neither of the 2020 prospects have been offered by South Carolina, but Antoine Sampah and Reuben Adams both have early Power 5 offers.

Sampah, a 6-foot-1, 203-pound linebacker, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 inside linebacker in the Class of 2020. Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Penn State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and West Virginia are among his early options. Adams (6-3, 280) is an offensive lineman with offers from Maryland and Rutgers.

Trenton Simpson will return to South Carolina after visiting a few weeks ago with his parents. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound running back is set to hit the field with assistant coach Bobby Bentley, his area recruiter and would-be position coach, if he takes the Gamecocks up on their offer. Charlotte, Colorado State and North Carolina have also offered the 2020 prospect.

Another 2020 prospect from North Carolina, Seth Williams, is set to attend camp on Wednesday. Williams, a 6-foot-4, 292-pound offensive lineman from Statesville High School, lists offers from Charlotte and Virginia.

Two-day stay

Micah Morris will visit on Thursday and Friday. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound offensive lineman is a 2021 prospect from Camden County High School in Kingsland, Ga.

Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Ohio State, South Carolina, and Tennessee have already offered Morris, who attended the Gamecocks’ spring game in March.

“Seeing how the intensity was,” Morris recently told SEC Country about what he liked from his South Carolina visit. “They were very intense. Everybody was pumped up and ready to go and I liked that.”

A few for Friday

Rodricus Fitten, South Carolina’s longest-tenured 2019 commitment, is expected to return to campus. Fitten is ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 29 weakside defensive end in the country, but the Gamecocks have him on board for their  ‘Buck’ position, which is a hybrid defensive end/outside linebacker job.

Four-star offensive lineman Warren McClendon (6-5, 290) told Andrew Spivey of Gator Country that he will return on Friday, seven days after seeing Florida. McClendon (Brunswick, Ga.) is ranked by the 247Sports composite as the No. 26 offensive tackle in the Class of 2019.

Offensive line coach Eric Wolford also will get an up-close look at John Williams, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound 2020 prospect from Creekview High School in Canton, Ga. Maryland, North Carolina State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Virginia have offered.

Last call

Two 2020 running backs from Georgia, both of whom have South Carolina offers, will be in for the Gamecocks’ final camp session of the summer: Kimani Vidal (5-10, 205) from Marietta and Jordon Simmons (5-10, 185) of Powder Springs-McEachern.

Jake Rubley, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback from Littleton, Colo., received offer No. 1 from South Carolina in May. He’ll throw for quarterbacks coach Dan Werner on Saturday.

Patrick Nations (Walhalla, S.C.) and Ryan Fitzgerald (Moultrie, Ga.) will be among the top kickers at the specialists’ camp.

In for the 7-on-7 tournaments

Listed below are few prospects whose teams are set to compete in one of the two 7-on-7 tournaments:

  • 2019 3-star CB Cam Smith (Blythewood-Westwood S.C.)
  • 2019 3-star RB Mikey Dukes (Charleston-First Baptist S.C.)
  • 2020 4-star WR Porter Rooks (Charlotte-Providence Day N.C.)
  • 2020 4-star DE Jacolbe Cowan (Charlotte-Providence Day N.C.)
  • 2020 4-star DT Xavier McIver (Cheraw, S.C.)
  • 2020 WR Jalen Coit (Cheraw, S.C.)
