Kenny McKinley was a great receiver for South Carolina and left USC as the all-time leading receiver. During his career with the Gamecocks he earned first-team honors from: the SEC coaches (All-SEC), the Associated Press and CollegeFootballNews.com. He was second-team All-SEC by Rivals.com and honorable mention All-America honors from CollegeFootballNews.com. McKinley also placed his name in the SEC record books. His 207 receptions placed third in conference annals, becoming just the fifth SEC player to amass more than 200 catches in a career. He also became the 12th player in league history to record more than 2,700 receiving yards (2,781). He went on the be drafted by the Denver Broncos.
His name certainly eternally belongs in the same breath that Sterling Sharpe, Sidney Rice, Alshon Jeffery, Deebo Samuel, Bryan Edwards, Robert Brooks, and Zola Davis reside...Gamecocks Receiving Legends.
Nearly 11 years ago to this day, Former Gamecocks WR #11 Kenny McKinley passed away from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The guy is remembered for his impeccable footwork and his famous ever present smile. While he always seemed happy, he was dealing with personal issues that increased his depression. His death was a shock to many of his fans, friends, and former teammates. Days after Kenny McKinley transitioned, Denver sportswriter Woody Paige wrote an article dedicated to the former Denver Broncos Punt Returner and Receiver. The article Paige wrote was striking due to Woody's casual but candid description of his own suicide plan and issues he was dealing with. He was lucky enough to get help before he carried out his plan: https://www.denverpost.com/2010/09/22/paige-we-must-learn-from-mckinley
