Gamecocks miss out on WR Ray Grier of Belmont, NC February 11. 2019 WR Ray Grier of Belmont, NC, a USC target, committed to North Carolina Saturday. He visited USC for the Tennessee game last season and was favoring the Gamecocks in late December, but Mack Brown made a strong push once he arrived in Chapel Hill. He’s the second receiver target who at one time was favoring USC but has committed elsewhere. Last week Ze’Vian Capers committed to Arkansas.
Gamecocks in prime position for 4 star North Carolina WR DECEMBER 21, 2018 BY PHIL KORNBLUT LINK: SPORTSTALK Rivals bio 247sports bio Rivals star ranking 247sports star ranking Ray Grier 4 star WR Ray Grier 6'3" 205lbs of Belmont, NC figures to be one of the top prospects in his state next season. Rivals ranks him #10 in the Tar Heel state for 2020 and the 38th best receiver in the country. His offers include USC, NC State, North Carolina, Tennessee, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Purdue. This season he got to games at USC, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia Tech, and Tennessee and he took another unofficial visit to Chapel Hill this month to meet up with Mack Brown and his new staff. Grier watched the Gamecocks play Tennessee this season and from that and other exposure to the Gamecocks he has them at the top of his list. “I like the play calling and I like Jake Bentley. He’s a great quarterback,” Grier said. “They are number one. The atmosphere feels like home.” Grier does not plan to make his decision until his senior season. In the last two seasons, according to MaxPreps stats, he has 53 catches for 1114 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Newly offered receiver sees a fit at USC MARCH 27, 2018 BY PHIL KORNBLUT LINK: SPORTSTALK Ray Grier WR Ray Grier (6-2 185) of Belmont, NC visited USC Saturday and before departing he snatched an offer thrown his way by Will Muschamp. Grier said the Gamecocks join NC State and Charlotte as his offers. While at USC he got the chance to tour the campus and watch the scrimmage inside Williams-Brice Stadium. “The visit went really good. It’s a beautiful school, I love the area, I love the campus, the dorm rooms the student-athletes live in is pretty nice space,” Grier said. Grier plays in a run first, option offense that limits his receiving opportunities. Still, he caught 31 passes for over 700 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. After watching the Gamecocks throw it around in their sped up offense, Grier thinks he could find a home there. “I think it will work out well,” he said. “They look good on both sides of the ball. They threw the ball a lot. I think I’ll have a great opportunity to get the ball if I go to that school. They said they love my film. I guess something I did on film woke them up or something because that’s all they really talked about. They talked about my film. They never talked to me personally about why exactly they like me, they just talked about my film.” Grier said he can play in the slot or he can split out, and his greatest asset as a receiver, he said, is“locating the football. If it’s up for grabs I’m going to get it.” Grier also has visited Virginia Tech, North Carolina, East Carolina and Appalachian State. He is going back to Virginia Tech April 7th. He said he does not have a favorite and will not be graduating early. He’s unsure when he will sign.
