  1. Muschamp & Mendenhall convene in Charlotte to preview Belk Bowl (AUDIO) DECEMBER 13, 2018 BY WILL PALASZCZUK South Carolina and Virginia meet in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte on December 29th. The head coaches of the South Carolina Gamecocks and Virginia Cavaliers held a press availability Thursday in Charlotte to preview the upcoming Belk Bowl matchup at Bank of America Stadium. Both teams are looking to reverse a trend, having never lost a game in Charlotte, with South Carolina playing in its second of three games in as many seasons in the home of the Panthers. Gamecocks Head Coach Will Muschamp updated the lengthy injury report, confirming the absences of DT Javon Kinlaw (hip surgery) and DB Keisean Nixon (neck issue) for the December 29th matchup. Muschamp did say they will get some relief as they expect LB Bryson Allen-Williams, DBs Jaycee Horn and Jaylin Dickerson, along with DE Keir Thomas all to play in the game. Defensive end Aaron Sterling is also a possibility to return for USC. South Carolina Head Coach Will Muschamp and Virginia Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall pose with the Belk Bowl trophy. Among other news items for South Carolina, Muschamp has set a target of “around 20” players expected to sign during the Early Signing Period which begins Wednesday. He said most of those signees will be early enrollees. Muschamp also said the team plans to move into the new Football Operations Building on January 7th upon the players reporting for the Spring semester. The head coach also said he plans to have all members of his coaching staff intact for the bowl and next season, and that no players outside of Deebo Samuel have approached him about skipping the bowl game. 2. Hilinski looking forward to busy December before reporting to Gamecocks (AUDIO) DECEMBER 10, 2018 BY WILL PALASZCZUK The South Carolina Gamecocks Coaching Staff used the final week before the Early Signing Period to check in on the crown jewel of their 2019 Class, quarterback Ryan Hilinski of Orange, California. Ryan Hilinski Hilinski, who already signed financial aid paperwork with South Carolina in November, will officially put pen to paper on December 19th while in Mexico for the World Bowl All-Star Game put on by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Gamecocks Head Coach Will Muschamp, Offensive Coordinator Bryan McClendon, and Quarterbacks Coach Dan Werner visited Hilinski on Monday, and Hilinski said Werner provided him with a basic early installation package of the South Carolina to memorize in anticipation of his January 7th move-in date. Hilinski says in addition to the trip to Mexico, he will also play in the US Army All-American Game, where he’s hoping to spend a lot of time with Gamecocks DB target Chris Steele of Bellflower, CA. Hilinski said he will work out with Steele this week, and is hoping to sway the former Southern California commit away from his other finalist, the Florida Gators. 3. Akron coach Terry Bowden (AUDIO) NOVEMBER 29, 2018 BY PHIL KORNBLUT Akron coach Terry Bowden previews this week’s game at USC (Akron Athletics) The USC football program has history with the Bowden coaching family. The Gamecocks scored one of the greatest wins in school history in 1984 against Bobby and Florida State. They had their problems with Tommy (2-7) when he was at Clemson. And they were 0-2 against Terry when he was at Auburn. They’ll see Terry again Saturday in Columbia in the regular season finale with a Noon kickoff. The Gamecocks are 6-5 and coming off the loss to Clemson. The Zips are 4-7 and losers of four in a row. The Gamecocks are favored by 30. Earlier this week Bowden met with the media in Akron to preview the game. Terry Bowden previews the USC game (from Akron Athletics)

It’s just not the game he aspires to be in. That would be the SEC Championship game in Atlanta. This Saturday Muschamp’s Gamecocks close out the regular season with Akron, a replacement game for the one cancelled with Marshall in September due to the hurricane. Sunday night on his conference call Muschamp touched some on the Clemson game and updated the injury status of several players. Will Muschamp conference call

  11. Will Muschamp Sunday night conference call with injury outlook (AUDIO) NOVEMBER 18, 2018 BY PHIL KORNBLUT Connor Shaw in 2013 was the last Gamecock quarterback to defeat Clemson USC clinched its third straight bowl bid under Will Muschamp Saturday night with a lopsided win over UTC. The Gamecocks are now 6-4 and headed to the Palmetto Bowl Saturday night at Clemson seeking to end a four-year losing streak to the Tigers. Clemson has been made a 25.5 point favorite. Sunday night Muschamp updated his team’s injuries and looked ahead to the Tigers. Injury outlook Horn suffered an ankle sprain against the Mocs. He is sixth on the team in tackles with 39 and is tied for the team lead (along with senior Keisean Nixon) with eight pass breakups. “Jaycee Horn, we think is going to be fine,” Muschamp said. “He should practice Tuesday.” The Tigers (11-0) are 28th in the nation in passing offense with 272.7 yards per game behind freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who is 20th in the nation in passer rating. Kinlaw left the last game after aggravating a hip and groin injury that has bothered him for the last month, Muschamp said, but he’s also expected to return against the Tigers. Kinlaw leads the Gamecocks in sacks with 3.5. He has nine tackles-for-loss, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. Starting safety Steven Montac, who sat out Chattanooga game, will return against Clemson. Montac is second on the team in tackles with 59. He also has five pass breakups. Safeties J.T. Ibe, Nick Harvey, Jamyest Williams and Javon Charleston already have been lost to season-ending or long term injuries. With Montac, R.J. Roderick and Horn at safety, cornerback Rashad Fenton will be the fourth safety, senior walk-on Jason Senn will be the fifth and freshman Jonathan Gipson will be the sixth, Muschamp said. “We have to have a great week of preparing for this game, and we have to do a better job of coaching this game than we have the last two years,” Muschamp said. 13. Will Muschamp Sunday night conference call (AUDIO) NOVEMBER 11, 2018 BY PHIL KORNBLUT Will Muschamp reacts to a call against the Gamecocks Saturday (Travis Bell/SIDELINE CAROLINA) USC’s Will Muschamp suffered one of the most disappointing losses of his coaching career Saturday. His Gamecocks could not protect a 17 point lead over the final 20 minutes at Florida. The loss prevented the Gamecocks from becoming bowl eligible and probably cost them a spot in a Florida bowl game unless they win their final three games. The Gamecocks are back at home for Senior Night this Saturday night against UT-Chattanooga. Sunday night Muschamp talked on his conference call about the loss at Florida, tackling and play calling, injuries and more. Will Muschamp conference call Muschamp announces South Carolina’s thinnest position takes another hit November 11, 2018 Add Jaylin Dickerson to the long list of injured South Carolina safeties. Dickerson pulled a hamstring muscle in Saturday’s 35-31 loss to Florida, head coach Will Muschamp announced Sunday, meaning the Gamecocks are now down to two healthy safeties on the roster as they prepare to play Chattanooga this week at 7:30 p.m. in Williams-Brice Stadium. “We are very thin,” said Muschamp, who added the coaching staff discussed Sunday night moving players from other positions to help with depth at the position. Senior Steven Montac and freshman R.J. Roderick are the only available safeties at the moment, although senior J.T. Ibe may be able to return this week after missing the last five games due to a knee injury. “I won’t know about him until Tuesday,” Muschamp said. Fellow senior graduate transfer Nick Harvey has missed the last four games due to a concussion. Harvey is out for the Chattanooga game and questionable for the remainder of the season. Safeties Jamyest Williams (shoulder) and Javon Charleston (foot) have been lost to season-ending injuries. There’s a chance Harvey could receive a medical redshirt season and return next year, Muschamp said. Cornerback Rashad Fenton can move to safety for South Carolina, and Muschamp said last week that wide receiver Shi Smith could play cornerback in an emergency situation. Defensive end Aaron Sterling is also doubtful for the Chattanooga game due to the knee injury that kept him out of the Florida game, Muschamp said. Junior running back Ty’Son Williams did not play against the Gators due to having a cast on his hand. “He was concerned about carrying the ball in one hand, and we were as well,” Muschamp said. “I would love to be able to cut the cast back a little bit, but his health is the most important thing. That’s up to the doctors.” Another close game. South Carolina is now 12-5 in games decided by seven points or fewer under Muschamp. “We had been really good in one-score games here, but we didn’t get it done and that’s on me,” Muschamp said. More missed tackles. Muschamp again expressed his displeasure with his team’s tackling against Florida and throughout the season. “Yesterday we had guys trying to butt guys down and not wrap up,” he said. “It’s been coached. Obviously, it’s not been coached well enough. That’s on me. You cannot butt guys down at our level, and we made that mistake again yesterday several times.” The Gamecocks “wore down” in the fourth quarter against the Gators, Muschamp said. “Too many missed tackles and that’s something we have been saying from week to week,” he said. “We lost too many one on ones. When it’s a draw, the offense wins. We have to defeat blocks.”

  16. SUNDAY NIGHTS TELECONFERENCE: Gamecocks defeat Ole Miss, but at a cost (AUDIO) NOVEMBER 4, 2018 SPORTSTALK The South Carolina Gamecocks left the field Saturday in Oxford a winner, but a wounded one. South Carolina has the opportunity at Florida to become bowl-eligible for the third season in a row. (Chris Gillespie/Gamecock Central) USC could ill-afford any more players lost in the secondary, but lost two players, Jamyest Williams (shoulder surgery) and Javon Charleston (lisfranc injury) to season-ending injuries. Add in that JT Ibe (knee) and Nick Harvey (concussion) are also not slated to play against Florida, South Carolina enters the week with very little depth behind Steven Montac, RJ Roderick and Jaylin Dickerson who played the majority of the second-half snaps at safety against Ole Miss. Muschamp said he hasn’t had a position since he’s been in coaching that’s been as singularly afflicted as the safety group. On the flip side, Muschamp said the other players hurt from Saturday are either day-to-day or expected back this week. This includes the injuries to Rico Dowdle (ankle) and Ty’Son Williams (bruised hand) who Muschamp said he expects will both play Saturday. The trip for Muschamp to Gainesville will be his second since taking the job at South Carolina, returning to the place where he spent the first five years of his head coaching career. He says he still looks at that time fondly, and has no hard feelings toward former Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley, his old boss with the Gators. Click to hear Muschamp’s further assessment of the win over Ole Miss and his preliminary thoughts about the Gators
  17. Coach’s Corner: Ole Miss’ Luke looks for renewed sense of focus after bye against Gamecocks (AUDIO) NOVEMBER 1, 2018 BY WILL PALASZCZUK Ole Miss Head Coach Matt Luke addresses the media ahead of South Carolina (Ole Miss Athletics) The Ole Miss Rebels have played their second probationary year as expected, and Head Coach Matt Luke is looking for more from his team after their open date. The 5-3 Rebels coasted through their non-conference schedule with four wins, but their only conference victory came against SEC-winless Arkansas. Ole Miss looked largely non-competitive in blowout losses to Alabama and LSU while losing by 15 to Auburn before the bye week. While the Rebels offense has the second-highest yardage total per game and third-highest scoring average in the SEC, much of those numbers have been inflated by their non-league schedule. While the Rebels average more than 38 points per game overall, that average is cut in half (19) if you only factor in their four SEC games. The Rebels defense has struggled against their entire schedule, including Southern Illinois of the FCS gaining 629 total yards and scoring 41 points against Ole Miss. Motivation has been a constant question at Ole Miss as they go through their second straight season under and NCAA-imposed bowl ban, but Luke believes his team is ready for his team’s final stretch drive. 20. Will Muschamp conference call OCTOBER 28, 2018 BY PHIL KORNBLUT Deebo Samuel makes a touchdown catch against Tennessee . (Travis Bell/SIDELINE CAROLINA) USC celebrated homecoming Saturday night with a thrilling win over the Tennessee Vols extending the winning streak in the series to three. The Gamecocks spent much of the night playing from behind and took their only lead on a Parker White field goal with just under six minutes left. The defense pitched a shutout in the fourth quarter giving the offense a chance to put together a game winning drive. The Gamecocks play at Ole Miss Saturday and the Rebels are 2.5 point favorites. Will Muschamp Sunday night conference call Injuries an issue as South Carolina gets ready for Ole Miss passing game South Carolina’s beleaguered secondary continues to be banged up heading into Saturday’s game against an Ole Miss team that leads the SEC in passing with nearly 350 yards per game through the air. Former starter J.T. Ibe remains doubtful this week because of a knee injury, and reserve Nick Harvey will miss his third consecutive game because of a concussion. Ibe, who has missed the past three games, earned the starting job in the preseason after arriving as a graduate transfer from Rice in the offseason. “I think J.T. is going to be back (this season). It’s been frustrating for him and everybody, but he’ll be back” Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said. “I can’t comment on Nick because I don’t know. It’s just the (concussion) protocol. I don’t have any say-so on that.” Starting left tackle Dennis Daley is questionable against Ole Miss because of an ankle injury suffered in Saturday’s 27-24 win against Tennessee. Wide receiver Bryan Edwards (ankle) and safety Jamyest Williams (shoulder) are expected to play. Reserve wide receiver Randrecous Davis missed the Tennessee because of a toe sprain and is questionable again this week. Wide receiver Chad Terrell’s return from an ACL tear was delayed by swelling in his knee. He could be back this week, Muschamp said. Players of the game. Offensive lineman Zack Bailey was named the offensive player of the game. Malik Young, who replaced the injured Dennis Daley during the game, was named the offensive lineman of the game. “He did a fantastic job,” Muschamp said. Quarterback Jake Bentley was named top effort player for offense. Bentley threw for 152 yards and rushed four times for 20 yards. Linebacker T.J. Brunson, who led the Gamecocks with a season-high 14 tackles, was named the defensive player of the game. Junior end Dennis Wonnum, who returned after missing five games due to an ankle injury, was the defensive lineman of the game. Place-kicker Parker White was named special teams player of the game. Still starting slow. The Gamecocks trailed Tennessee 14-9 at halftime on Saturday and have been outscored 74-26 in the first half of the past four games. Muschamp said immediately after the game that his coaching staff had “exhausted” every idea of how to reverse that trend, but Sunday night said they have come up with something new they might try. “We just have to move the chains,” Muschamp said. “We rep our (game-opening plays) on Thursday and Friday. Maybe we need to rep them on Wednesday. Not many people do that, but maybe that’s something we need to do. We talked about that today. We will continue to exhaust a lot of conversation on what we need to do to get a better start.”

  22. Sunday Review: Muschamp Believes Wonnum will be back for Tennessee (AUDIO) OCTOBER 21, 2018 BY WILL PALASZCZUK South Carolina Gamecocks Head Coach Will Muschamp believes his team will get one of its biggest defensive playmakers back for their next game against Tennesssee. South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp keeps an eye on the action during the Georgia game on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 in Columbia, S.C. (Travis Bell/SIDELINE CAROLINA) Defensive End DJ Wonnum, who hasn’t played since the opening game of the season with the knee injury, has been running for the last two weeks, and Muschamp believes he will play against the Volunteers. Muschamp also said DBs JT Ibe (knee) and Nick Harvey (concussion) remain sidelined with injuries, and RB AJ Turner is questionable in concussion protocol. The Gamecocks (3-3, 2-3 SEC) host a Tennessee team coming off a blowout loss to Alabama, but Muschamp believes they provide a formidable foe coming into Williams-Brice Stadium. The Head Coach said Jake Bentley will start at quarterback, but they will not be afraid to turn to backup Michael Scarnecchia if the game dictates a change.
