  16. New USC PG Tre Campbell hit the SportsTalk airwaves Tuesday night (AUDIO) MAY 8, 2018 BY PHIL KORNBLUT LINK: SPORTSTALK Tre Campbell USC basketball coach Frank Martin Tuesday picked up a point guard candidate for the 2018-19 season in Georgetown 6-2 grad transfer Tre Campbell. The Washington, DC native announced Tuesday morning he will play for the Gamecocks for his final season after missing all of last season. He made an official visit to USC last weekend. “It all came together when Coach Bruce (Shingler) called me like a month ago and said they wanted to recruit me and we’ve just been going on from there,” Campbell said. “I felt excited. I wanted to play in the SEC. That’s good competition every game. I can’t beat that, playing against Kentucky, going to Kentucky, playing against Florida, all the good teams that’s in the SEC, so I felt like I wanted to play in that conference.” Campbell said he’s watched Martin from afar and has now seen him up close and he feels he will be a good fit in the system this season. “Frank Martin is a cool guy. I got to know him and want to build a relationship with him and he wants to build a relationship with me,” Campbell said. “His style of play, he’s high intensity. He has a motor to him. I’ve got a motor to me. I can play defense and I know that’s he likes to do, play defense and get out on transition and score the ball.” Campbell primarily was a back up point guard for the Hoyas his first three seasons after a stellar high school career when analysts rated him the #2 point guard in Washington and among the top 25 nationally. He chose Georgetown over other reported offers from Maryland, Penn State, Pitt and Xavier. His career numbers with the Hoyas were 3.4 points, 1.3 assists and 1.2 rebounds per game. His best season was his sophomore year when he played on average 21 minutes per game and scored over 4 points per game. “As a point guard, I know coming into this season I’m going to have to score, facilitate, do everything,” Campbell said. “I like to get my guys involved but I know I’m probably going to have to score a little bit bit more but I’m also going to have to contribute to my teammates too and pass the ball and play defense.” Campbell’s career took an unexpected turn in February of 2017. He suffered torn meniscus in a knee when the Georgetown team bus was in an accident on the way to Philadelphia for a game against Villanova. He missed that game and played just six minutes over the final eight games of the season. He underwent surgery last May and doctors told him he faced a 9-12 month recovery. Campbell was given his release from the program last August but remained in school and on scholarship. With the addition of Campbell, who plans to be on campus the first week of June, Martin now has 11 scholarship players for this coming season though two, Chris Silva and Brian Bowen, currently are considering entering the NBA Draft.
