  1. This time a year ago, there’s almost no doubt that South Carolina would enter Vanderbilt Stadium wearing “big game garnet” for the season-opener. White helmets, of course, because that’s all that the Gamecocks had in stock, with garnet jerseys and pants. Once former head coach Steve Spurrier resigned his post, interim head coach Shawn Elliott brought as much flavor as he could in a short time. There was a redesign of the helmet removing the Block C and adding a tailfeather. Garnet helmets were introduced and all black uniforms were worn once as well. This year though, under first-year head coach Will Muschamp, there are several different uniform options from top to bottom. The players, asked on Friday if they knew what uniform combination they’d don for the first game, said they didn’t have any idea. What they did know is that that new director of equipment operations Larry Waters would take care of them. “Larry’s a cool dude,” D.J. Smith said. “He’s bringing in the new cleats, the new everythings. He’ll have us looking fresh.” Waters arrived at South Carolina in May of this year leaving as an assistant at Alabama for the director position in Columbia. Vanderbilt announced they’re having a “White Out” for college football’s opener, which is set to kickoff at 8 p.m. on ESPN. That means there will certainly be some color in the Gamecocks’ uniforms, and likely the helmets as well. South Carolina has three helmets to choose from - the typical whites that Spurrier preferred, garnet ones that were worn last year against Clemson, and the new matte blacks. The Gamecocks have jerseys and pants in both garnet and black. Of course, if they wanted to wear white pants, that’s certainly an option as well. During practices and scrimmages, the players have worn a different combination of uniforms and helmets. The following slides show just a few of the possible choices for Waters and his staff, and Smith is sure they’ll look fresh.
