With South Carolina’s new opening, how competitively Gamecocks football pays

December 06, 2017

South Carolina now has an opening at offensive coordinator. Filling it will take some money, and fortunately, exactly how well the Gamecocks pay just became public.

USA Today released its annual database of assistant coach salaries for 2017. The top of USC’s staff remains competitive, including the offensive coordinator spot Kurt Roper was just removed from.

Roper and Gamecocks defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson were both in the top 40. Robinson’s $750,000 was tied for 36th nationally, while Roper’s $700,000 was tied for 39th (they were 18th and 19th in the SEC).

The Gamecocks total staff ranked 17th in the country and 10th in the SEC. It should be noted that includes Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M and Ole Miss, all staffs that will be mostly different next season.

South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp and his staff are in line for a raise after the season.

The Gamecocks’ Jeff Dillman is No. 9 among strength coaches at $400,000, third highest-paid in the SEC.

Other USC assistants:

WR coach/Co-OC Bryan McClendon, $500,000

DL coach/assistant head coach of defense Lance Thompson, $500,000

OL coach Eric Wolford, $500,000

Special Teams Coordinator/LB coach Coleman Hutzler, $350,000

RB coach Bobby Bentley, $300,000

TE coach Pat Washington, $200,000

OLB/Buck coach Mike Peterson, $200,000

Really need to start paying guys if you really want to compete to get the best staff and be able to keep them. Just need a lot of improvement, can only go cheap so far. Carolina has been that way forever.

Hopefully, they won't follow the long, winding path it took them to finally realize upgraded facilities are needed to compete with the big fellas.
