Game week 7: Talking  Tennessee Volunteers (Discussion Thread)

Two things to remember next week:

1. A win would mean Muschamp is 5-0 against Butch Jones

2. Tennessee will be fighting for their life with a home crowd behind them. Even if they are truly spiraling downward at an exponential rate, we're going to receive everything they can throw at us. We have to effectively stack the box, force their QB to throw it, and shove it down their throats on offense. This will have to be our best offensive performance of the year in order to win.

2.5 point underdog at Tennessee

4-2 against the spread, but the 2 losses were the only two games that the Gamecocks were favored.

4-0 as dogs, which is impressive. But what is more impressive is that the Gamecocks on three of the games outright.

Three outright wins as dogs means that Vegas has been waaaay off in their assessment of our team. Gotta keep proving them wrong.

SC is 5-5 against TN over the last decade and 6-6 against TN over the last 12 years.

Measuring a 12 year stretch is completely random and self-serving, I know, but I was just thinking about the long stretch in which we always lost to TN every dadgum year (i.e., Gamecocks didn't beat them a single time from 1993 to 2004) and was wondering how long it had been a competitive series. Win Saturday and Gamecocks will have a 6-4 edge over the last decade. Tennessee leads the series 25-8-2, so I think it's significant that the Gamecocks closed the gap a great deal over the last 10 to 12 years. In the 2000's the Gamecocks were 2-8 against them but in the 2010's Gamecocks are 4-3 thus far and would be, obviously, 5-3 in the 2010's with a win Saturday.

By the way, it is not the first time the Gamecocks led the series over a particular decade. Gamecocks OWNED them in the 1900's. Gamecocks played one time, 1903 (the first time the Gamecocks ever played them), and won 24-0. Lol!

The last time that South Carolina won in the same week that Clemson lost.

The Gamecocks won in an insane comeback against Florida, taking it in overtime for a 23-20 victory on November 15, 2014 (which oddly enough was the game that forced Florida to let go of Muschamp).

The Tigers, meanwhile, lost brutally to Georgia Tech 28-6, sealing their fate as 2nd place finishers in their conference division.

That day, and that week, was a big one for both programs and their respective seasons.

Now, this week, the opportunity arises again. Clemson lost embarrassingly to Syracuse, tarnishing their their top 4 standing and setting them back to 2nd place in their division, below NC State. South Carolina, on the other hand, has the chance to win a tough away game against Tennessee which would all but secure a bowl game, and be a real page turner for Muschamp's program, setting the Gamecocks up to finish strong in the SEC East for the first time in years.

But can we handle the challenge? We will see...
