Gamecocks lose freshman safety for the season

August 2, 2017

South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp told reporters on Saturday afternoon that Jaylin Dickerson will miss the 2017 season.

The freshman safety is scheduled to have shoulder surgery on Wednesday.

“The nerve specialist feels like that is the best route to go,” Muschamp said. “[Dickerson] will be aerobic training within three weeks. He will be lifting weights within eight weeks. It’s a six month recovery, so he’ll be cleared in January and cleared for spring practice.

“I hurt for Jaylin. He had a wonderful spring and was certainly going to be a contributor for our football team this year. It hurts us, especially at a place where we need depth and a good football player and that’s what he is, but I’m excited about his future as a Gamecock.”

Junior defensive back Steven Montac will be in a boot for 10 days after suffering a stress fracture in his foot. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Randrecous Davis is “still having some soft tissue issues,” though Muschamp believes he’ll be back next week.

Redshirt sophomore defensive Shameik Blackshear (concussion) practiced on Friday and practiced again on Saturday.

The Gamecocks will return to the practice field on Monday afternoon at 2:50 and reporters are permitted to watch during the first three periods. Offensive line coach Eric Wolford and players from that side of the ball will be made available on Tuesday. ‘Bucks’ coach Mike Peterson will be joined by defensive players for an availability on Thursday.
