South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp spoke with reporters on Sunday night during his weekly teleconference.

Here’s what the Gamecocks second-year head coach had to say:

  • Opening: Muschamp began with a thank you for the fans. Said it made a difference for the team during the game and it’s also something recruits notice. A noon showing, like the one at WBS on Saturday, was strong, he thought.
  • Third-down was “outstanding” for the South Carolina defense. A.J. Turner was the player of the game on the offensive side of the ball for his work in the run game and as a receiver.
  • Javon Kinlaw was the defensive player and Taylor Stallworth was the defensive lineman of the week. The ball hawk award, which normally goes to players who create turnovers, included Joseph Charlton.
  • Javon Charleston was the player of the game, overall, because of his work on special teams.
  • Shi Smith will see an eye doctor tomorrow, but they’re optimistic there. D.J. Smith, who was out with a hip injury against Florida, should be back this week. Smith, the freshman wide receiver, should be fine.
  • Muschamp mentioned Hayden Hurst as a senior, just now.
  • “We haven’t gotten off the field on defense like that all year,” Muschamp said of the Florida game.
  • “I think there’s a fine line between trying to make a play and being smart,” Muschamp said, after being asked about Jake Bentley’s interceptions. “A lot of the plays. … Have been off-rhythm plays where he’s being a good football player.”
  • When Muschamp was on staff at LSU, during the preparation for the national championship game, Wofford coach Mike Ayers spent some time with Nick Saban’s staff, to help with the Tigers punt team.
  • Two days during training camp and two days during the bye week: That’s the extent of of South Carolina’s prep for Wofford’s option offense.
