Gamecock Fanatics Corner: Taking steps forward 2018

Gamecock Fanatics Corner: Taking steps forward 2018

Henry Fusco

Sept. 09, 2018

The preseason hype has faded into reality, Gamecocks look to be in the same place. Looking up to the likes of Georgia, Clemson, Alabama and other elite programs. What is in store for the rest of 2018 will be a mixed bag. I feel Gamecocks squarely looking at 7 to maybe 9 wins at most for 2018 campaign.  Thankfully the next elite program will be at the end of the season when the Gamecocks will face Clemson on the road.

With that in mind, the teams that seem to give Gamecock fits recently are Kentucky and Texas A&M.  Kentucky really would love to see a win here to break up the losing strick. Another is Texas A&M with  4-0  another long losing strick. Now if the Gamecocks can split or win both will go a long way in helping the Gamecock program move forward. A 1-1 split would show signs as well. But both would be very satisfying and really show improvement from last year.1CLEAR_red_FEATHERECOCK182x183boom.thumb

Gamecocks have to win more recruiting battles for the 4 and 5-star players. Gamecocks have had very solid recruiting classes the past 2 years.  Top 25 classes in most Recruiting experts minds. But to get close to elite and have a real chance to beat them, Gamecocks need to stack up a couple of top 10 classes to move their talent up to that level to really compete on the field of play.

Recruiting for this year class looks like a 15 to 20 spot if the Gamecocks can close strong. Only a handful of scholarships left for 2019 class and Gamecocks are trying to make inroads to the 2020 class which looks strong very early in the cycle. Wins will help there. Beating yes beating Kentucky and Texas A&M this year would be a big plus and show progress is being meet on the field.

Gamecock fans want the wins over Georgia, Clemson, and the Bamas. You can with the elite players the program needs. Not just one or two but a group and good core and that will only be accomplished in recruiting getting the elite players to play here.

The season is young but no East Division or SEC Titles for 2018. Just need to compete with the best, Keep the high profile games close showing you are closing the gap with talent. Win 8 or 9 games this year go to a good Bowl game and keep recruiting hard which this staff has done a very good job at. Saturday was a step back but hopefully, the rest of the season will be a step forward for the program in 2018.
